My Creative
Journey

What I love most about the process of making is that every mat that I work on is an opportunity to explore and develop my own creativity. Whether it is producing traditional designs that would not be out of place on the kitchen floors of my ancestors or exploring more modern designs to produce something that is vibrant, colourful, fun and unique. The joy is truly in the making and the creative journey can lead anywhere.

One of the aspects of traditional rug making that sits well with me is the fact that there is a sustainable element to it. The use of preloved and recycled wool fabric means that old blankets and clothes can be given a new life and turned into something really wonderful. The process of hunting out, washing and preparing the fabric is all part of the process of making a traditional mat.

I also incorporate new wool into my designs and spend time dyeing fabric to achieve the colours that I need when I can’t find them in recycled fabrics.

Every piece I create is undertaken with care, and thought is given to producing something of quality that will give pleasure and enjoyment to whoever receives it.

My Creative Mission

Historically traditional mat making was a working class activity that took the combined effort of the whole family with skills and techniques being passed from one generation to the next.

Whilst the making of mats is no longer a family based activity as it was in the days when entertainment was less and the need to repurpose and reuse was more.

My own acquisition of skills and techniques are a result of having the benefit of the experience and creative guidance of my own mother and from interacting with other enthusiastic rug makers who engender a generosity of spirit in sharing and supporting the craft.

I believe that the ability to create is present in us all and to embrace that and explore that is the right of every individual.

My creative mission is to inspire, to share and to encourage anyone who is keen and eager to embrace their own creativity.

I am dedicated to sharing this wonderful age old traditional craft.
